Community need

Replacing a lost local service

The previous village shop closed in February 2025, leaving residents without convenient access to daily essentials and increasing travel for basic shopping.

Community ownership

Run for local benefit

The shop is proposed as a Community Benefit Society with open membership through share purchase, democratic governance, and an asset lock.

Long-term value

A shop and village hub

Beyond retail, the project aims to strengthen community resilience, reduce isolation, and create future surplus that can support local projects.

What the project says

Vision, aims, and objectives

  • Establish a community-run shop serving residents, visitors, holidaymakers, and travellers.
  • Create a welcoming focal point that improves community cohesion and accessibility.
  • Operate a not-for-profit enterprise owned and managed by the community.
  • Recruit and train volunteers, work with local suppliers, and encourage pride and participation.
  • Achieve financial sustainability and operational stability within three years.
Why here

Background and local context

The plan describes Kilve as a rural village with limited public transport and a significant number of older residents or people without easy access to private transport. The A39 is the main route to larger towns but is narrow, busy, and prone to disruption.

The preferred location identified is the southeast corner of the Christopher Robin Garden because of its central position, safe pedestrian access, and nearby parking.

Who the shop would serve

Target customers

  • Local residents using the shop for regular top-up shopping
  • Tourists and holidaymakers
  • Walkers and cyclists looking for refreshments and supplies
  • Passing trade from the A39
  • Hinkley Point C workforce and visitors to Kilve Court
What it would offer

Products and services

  • Staple foods, bread, milk, dairy, fresh produce, and local farm goods
  • Household essentials, frozen foods, snacks, gifts, cards, newspapers, and stationery
  • Over-the-counter medicines, baby products, and impulse items
  • Possible optional services such as dry cleaning, prescription collection, and cash withdrawal or cashback
  • Retail space for local artists and artisans
